FDMC obeležio Međunarodni dan starih osoba / FDMC marked International Day of Older Persons
On the occasion of marking the International Day of Older Persons, UNHCR partner organization, the Forum for Development and Multiethnic Collaboration from Gracanica, organized a visit of a nurse to the elderly from the Collective Shelters in Strpce Municipality.
Nearly 40 people over the age of 60 are accommodated in the three Collective Shelters, Elektrokosovo, Lahor and Junior, in Strpce Municipality.
NGO FDMC from Gracanica, with the help of UNHCR, takes care of the Collective Shelters beneficiaries Kosovo wide, on a daily basis. On the International Day of Older Persons, FDMC staff, together with a nurse from the Health Center in Strpce, organized the measurement of blood pressure, blood sugar and pulse oximetry.
For 90-year-old Slobodka Simić from the collective center Elektro-Kosovo, the visit of the nurse means a lot. As she points out, „I am immobile and in extremely poor health so that I am not able to go to the health center, nurse visit is a happy day in my life.“
Slobodka is cared for by her daughter-in-law Slavica, who also has problems with high blood pressure, so this visit and blood pressure measurement was good because she did not leave the center for days and was not able to go to the health institution.
It was a real surprise for eighty-year-olds Dobrila and Vlasta Živković from the Lahor Collective Shelter to bring a nurse who did them a basic medical examination. Vlasta has been immobile for 18 years, his wife Dobrila takes care of him, and they spend two decades of their lives in a room of 12 square meters. Although old and exhausted, they try to keep the small space clean and tidy, and what they miss the most is a separate bathroom, because as Dobrila says, „it is very difficult to go down to the second floor with a immobile husband to maintain personal hygiene.“
The visit and a short conversation with the FDMC staff, awakened their feelings that they were not forgotten, that is what the Zivkovics told us on the way out of their apartment.
Nurse Branka Ljubić from the Štrpce Health Center knows almost all the users of the collective centers, so in addition to the basic examination she did, she used the opportunity to talk to some of them. Her job is not only to refer patients to the doctor, if they feel discomfort, but also to point out to them in a warm voice that they are not forgotten and that they will visit them constantly, and not only on the day of the elderly.
International Day of Older Persons is celebrated in the world and in our country on October 1, in accordance with Resolution 45/106 proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 14th December 1990. with the aim of emphasizing the importance of adapting the living environment to the needs and abilities of older persons.
